Best of 2018
Hello - long time, no see.
In case anyone is reading my blog and they were wondering why I hadn't been posting anything lately - well, I was pretty much occupied with trying to like Ariana Grande, but... I failed :)
I didn't fail, however, in compiling a Top 100 list of my personal favourite songs from last year. As I was writing my university thesis on consumer society and as I was teaching the basics of marketing and economy, for me a song is a product and since there are so many items to choose from, a great song has to stand out from the competition.
Now there are various ways to do that, from having an outstanding music quality to meaningful lyrics, from being a well-reputed oldschool artist to an interesting newbee, from providing a signature sound to letting us in to the unconventional. Packed in a memorable music video, of course.
But the bottom line is the personal connection between the user and the song. Unfortunately most of the above-mentioned qualities do not sell songs anymore, but that is only because we are told so. The truth is, however, that with sales based on streaming, charts and hit parades often do not indicate how many copies consumers really purchased - physically or via download - even though the purchasing power is still there and should be put more emphasis on.
Anyway, based on what I just said, this is my personal Top 10 from 2018:
10. Muse: Something Human
9. Snow Patrol: Empress
8. George Ezra: Paradise
7. LCAW feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor: Hummingbird
6. Armin Van Buuren feat. James Newman: Therapy
5. Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa: One Kiss
4. Chicane: A Love That's Hard To Find
3. Kylie Minogue: Stop Me From Falling
2. Justin Timberlake & Chris Stapleton: Say Something
1. Maroon 5: Girls Like You
