Twenty Years of Summer (1996-2016)
2007
It was a year when university pissed me off so I decided to go and work on a cruise-ship. I left my home in September and spent most of the summer before travelling and having job interviews. Meanwhile I was listening to the following songs:
- on the alternative side the Editors (Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors), the Klaxons (It's Not Over Yet) and Hard-Fi (Suburban Knights) had some hits.
- on the pop side then-ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena (Real Girl) had her first song as a solo artist plus destiny's children Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland had hits on their own - the former featuring Shakira (Beautiful Liar), the latter featuring rapper Eve (Like This).
Furthermore Maroon 5's Makes Me Wonder, Newton Faulkner's Dream Catch Me, Hellogoodbye's (Here) In Your Arms, Bon Jovi's (You Want To) Make a Memory and Cupid's Chokehold by the Gym Class Heroes were big, too.
- Mika, Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse were all over the place.
- Clubs offered Armand Van Helden's NYC Beat, Yves La Rock's Rise Up, Richard Grey's Tainted Love, Paul Van Dyk's White Lies, Alex Gaudino's Destination Calabria as well as D.A.N.C.E. by Justice, Pusher by the Shapeshifters, Do It Again by The Chemical Brothers to dance to.
Even though it was not an easy decision, I chose the following ten songs to best represent the summer of 2007:
1. Rihanna featuring Jay-Z: Umbrella
2. Timbaland feat. Keri Hilson: The Way I Are
3. Kanye West: Stronger
4. Kate Nash: Foundations
5. Plain White T's: Hey There Delilah
6. Calvin Harris: The Girls
7. Simian Mobile Disco: I Believe
8. Groove Armada featuring Mutya Buena: Song 4 Mutya
9. Robyn with Kleerup: With Every Heartbeat
10. Dame Shirley Bassey: Get This Party Started
