Twenty Years of Summer (1996-2016)
2006
This was a remarkable year for me because I spent five months in Spain and by the time I arrived home the high season had begun so some of the summer tunes I first heard in a sunny, Mediterranean country. Furthermore, I also had the opportunity to visit the island of Ibiza, where I remember tol isten to dance anthems like Madonna’s Get Together or I Just Can’t Get Enough by Herd & Fitz feat. Abigail Bailey.
One more reason why the summer of 2016 had been different is due to the first musical steps of Paris Hilton – a masterpiece, indeed :D
Otherwise that summer had quite a lot of huge names, for example Rihanna, The Pussycat Dolls, Sergio Mendez, Jennifer Lopez, LL Cool J, Keane, Muse or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their songs included SOS, Más Que Nada, Crystalball, Dani California, Buttons, Supermassive Black Hole or Control Myself.
Other hits included You Give Me Something by James Morrison, Last Request by Paolo Nutini, Sexy Love by Ne-Yo, Minimal by the Pet Shop Boys, Monster by Automatic, Wish I Was a Punk Rocker by Sandi Thom , Smile by Lily Allen and Young Folks by Peter, John and Björn.
Also, Nelly Furtado had a massive comeback with Maneater and later with Promiscuous Girl, as well.
Finally, on the dancefloor Armand Van Helden’s My My My was played - because it was only released in the UK in 2006 – alongside Bob Sinclair’s World Hold On, Till West’s Same Man, Paul Oakenfold’s Faster Kill Pussycat, We Are Your Friends by Justice Vs. Simian and Somebody’s Watching Me by Beatfreakz.
But which ten songs are even more essential to the summer of 2006?
Here they come:
1. Gnarls Barkley: Crazy
2. George Michael: An Easier Affair
3. Justin Timberlake: Sexyback
4. Pharrell feat. Kanye West: Number One
5. Chicane feat. Tom Jones: Stoned in Love
6. Shapeshifters & Chic: Sensitivity
7. Christina Aguilera: Ain’t No Other Man
8. Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean: Hips Don’t Lie
9. Solu Music: fade
10. Supermode: Tell Me Why
