Twenty Years of Summer (1996-2016)

2004

After some research I have to say that the summer of 2004 was one with a lot of ass shaking, however, much of the "hits" were meaningless and definitely not necessary.

First of all there was this annoying tune by DJ Casper (Cha Cha Slide), which became number one in the UK. Then there was this other annoying song by Soul Control (Chocolate), which ended up being the 25th best selling song in Germany that year. But the most annoying title of 2004 was definitely the biggest pop anthem, coming from the Balkans: Dragostea Din Tei by both O-Zone and Haiducci.

On the other hand there were quite a lot of r'n'b songs for example Suga Suga by Baby Bash, I Don't Wanna Know by Mario & P. Diddy, Fuck You by Eamon, Fuck You Right Back by Frankie, Dumb by 411, Move Ya Body by Nina Sky and Let's Get It Started by The Black Eyed Peas.

Also Nelly Furtado, Shazney Lewis, Girls Aloud, Keane, Kasabian, Faithless and George Michael had some pop classics that year. Anastacia claimed two remarkable chart entries at the same time because while Sick & Tired was big in Central Europe, the UK still loved Left Outside Alone. And did you know that Amy Winehouse already had a UK Top 75 song in 2004 called Fuck Me Pumps?

Finally Stonebridge, Armand Van Helden, Candee Jay, Junior Jack, Mousse T, Freestylers and Danzel pushed and pumped up the dancefloor charts.

However, I chose the following 12 songs to best represent the summer of 2004:

Kelis: Trick Me

Lou Reed: Satellite of Love 2004

Aventura: Obsesión

Maroon 5: This Love

Hoobastank: The Reason

Alcazar: This Is The World We Live In

Natasha Bedingfield: These Words

Kylie Minogue: Chocolate

The Corrs: Summer Sunshine

Shapeshifters: Lola's Theme

Deep Dish: Flashdance

Basement Jaxx feat. Lisa Kekaula: Good Luck
