Twenty Years of Summer (1996-2016)
2001
Once again a remarkable year as I started university in the fall so the summer before it was all about adventure and fun - like one last time before the real serious stuff starts... :D
What was I thinking... :D
However, it all started with the Gorillaz and probably was ended by Kylie Minogue - the summer of 2001 had everything: from Geri Halliwell's body scandal to the construction of the boyband Blue (that does not really exist anymore).
The US Billboard Hot 100 offered hits by Joe (Sutter), Lifehouse (Hanging By A Moment), Faith Hill (There You'll Be), Train (Drops of Jupiter) and Usher (You Remind Me).
The UK offered us pop hits by S Club 7 (Don't Stop Movin'), Stereophonics (Have A Nice Day), Travis (Sing) and Robbie Williams (Eternity).
Elsewhere Dante Thomas had a popular summer hit with Miss California.
Missy Elliott's Get UR Freak On was huge, too.
Besides the iconic Loveparade anthem by Jam & Spoon (feat. Rea Garvey) Be Angeled, other dancefloor burners included Eddie Grant's Electric Avenue 2001, ATB's Let U Go, Kosheen's Hide U, We Come One by Faithless, Precious Heart by Tall Paul Vs. INXS, Never Enough by Boris Dlugosch & Roisín Murphy, Superstylin' by Groove Armada, Castles In The Sky by Ian Van Dahl, Miami Pop by Phil Fuldner and UK number one Do You Really Like It by DJ Pied Piper.
Finally Nelly Furtado started to spread her wings with Turn Off The Light (the follow-up to I'm Like A Bird), Roxette had a comeback with Center Of The Heart, D12 took some Purple Pills, Limp Bizkit showed us the way on the highway with My Way, Basement Jaxx swept the floor with Romeo and Jamiroquai entered the UK Top 10 with Little L.
Unfortunately there was a tragic plane crash in the summer of 2001 in which singer Aaliyah died. RIP.
But the most impressive hits of that summer were:
Uncle Kracker: Follow Me
Shaggy feat. Rayvon: Angel
Nelly: Ride With Me
Titiyo: Come Along
Destiny's Child: Bootylicious
Eve feat. Gwen Stefani: Let Me Blow Ya Mind
Christina Aguilera/Pink/Lil'Kim/Mya: Lady Marmalade
Roger Sanchez: Another Chance
Daddy DJ - Daddy DJ
Schiller Mit Heppner: Dream Of You
