Twenty Years of Summer (1996-2016)
1999
This summer was probably the last one with tons of typical summer hits, that is, mucho ritmo, nonsense or superficial lyrics and group-dancing, beach videos. These types of songs were performed by the Vengaboys, Loona, Lou Bega, Ann-Lee and Passion Fruit in 1999.
More famous performers of summer hits included Whitney Houston with My Love Is Your Love, Ricky Martin with Livin' La Vida Loca, Will Smith and his Wild Wild West, Geri Halliwell (AKA ginger spice) with Mi Chico Latino, Jamiroquai with Canned Heat and Destiny's Child with Bills, Bills, Bills.
Three summers in a row Savage Garden appeared with a hit-quality song - this time it was The Animal Song.
Turkish singer Tarkan was famous that year, The Offspring asked Why Don't You Get A Job?, Andru Donalds was All Out Of Love, ATB topped the UK charts with 9PM (Here I Come) - originally from 1998 - Cher sang All Or Nothing and film director Baz Luhrmann told us to wear Sunscreen.
One of the biggest club hits came from the project called Rollergirl who sampled Madonna's Dear Jessie.
Still there are ten more songs that best represented the summer of 1999 - as far as I remember:
Shanks & Bigfoot: Sweet Like Chocolate
Eiffel 65: Blue
Wamdue Project: King Of My Castle
Phats & Small: Turn Around
Masterboy: Porque Te Vas
Texas: Summer Son
Madonna: Beautiful Stranger
Shania Twain: That Don't Impress Me Much
Jennifer Lopez: If You Had My Love
Chicane feat. Moya Brennan: Saltwater
